William Ray BAKER

William Ray BAKER, 88, of Fairfield, formerly of 500 E. Washington Ave., died at 4:35 a.m. Monday, July 23, 2001, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dave Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Raymond Funeral Home. Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church or to the Fairfield Fire Department.

Mr. BAKER was born July 7, 1913, in Fairfield, the son of William Ray and Carrie Belle LOEHR BAKER. He married Cleota Beryl DAVIS June 6, 1936, in Fairfield. She died Nov. 4, 1998.

A lifetime resident of Fairfield, he attended Logan grade school and graduated from the Fairfield High School. He first worked making wooden egg crates for Zeigler Produce, he then worked for a bakery. He was executive secretary for the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and was responsible for establishing the Christmas lights in central park while he was secretary.

He was the assistant fire chief for 25 years and concurrently was city editor for the Fairfield Daily Ledger. He walked his reporting route each morning with stops at the court house, fire station, police department, city hall and attended city council meeting each Tuesday for the news.

He wrote a "History of Jefferson County" which included stories of towns of the past that are no longer in existence.

A member of the First United Methodist Church, he served on numerous church boards and was a longtime chairman of the church administrative board. He was a lifelong member of the Circus Fans of America.

Survivors include one son, Ronald BAKER and wife Jean of Louisville, Neb.; grandchildren, Will BAKER, Christopher BAKER, Melissa BAKER, Robin JOHANSEN and Robin KELLY; and four great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George, Frank and Arthur; and three sisters, Lillian ZEIGLER, Helen DAGGETT and one who died at birth.
