Crash Kills 2 Local Men

Two Fairfield men were instantly killed in a headon collision near Oskaloosa early this morning.

They have been identified as James ARNDT, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. James ARNDT, Route 1, Fairfield, and Russell A. Gjovig, 20, son of Mrs. Camille Gjovig, 107 W. Madison.

Mahaska County officers said the accident took place about a mile east of Oskaloosa on Highway 63. They said the car driven by Gjovig was headed east and a car driven by James E. Long, 20, Des Moines, was headed west.

Reports said the two cars met headon and the two Fairfield men were instantly killed. Mahaska County officers said this morning no details were available and that the investigation was continuing.

Occupants of the other car were injured but not fatally according to the report by officers.

Relatives said the two Fairfield young men had been attending the Iowa State Fair at Des Moines and were returning home.

Gjovig had just returned from Glendale, Calif., where he had been to visit his father, Ervin G. Gjovig. The accident victim would have been a junior student at the University of Iowa at Iowa City this fall.

Funeral services for Gjovig will be held Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Chapel of Memories in West Waterloo.

Russell Gjovig was born March 20, 1954, at Waterloo. the family moved to Fairfield some time ago and Russell graduated from the Fairfield Community High School with the Class of 1972.

Survivors include his mother and father; one brother, Roger L., 107 W. Madison; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Bunting, Waterloo.

Ronald James ARNDT was born Sept. 25, 1954, in Fairfield, the son of James and Teresa McINERNEY ARNDT.

He graduated from the Fairfield Community High School with the Class of 1972 and had been employed this summer by the Iowa Highway Commission.

The body is at the Raymond Funeral Home where last rites are pending.

Ronald ARNDT is survived by his parents; two brothers, Eric, a foreign exchange student now in South Africa, and Carl at home; three sisters, Susan, Christie and Jennifer, all at home.

He is also survived by the following grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. ARNDT, Fairfield; and Mrs. McINERNEY, Ottumwa.

ARNDT Rites On Tuesday

Funeral services for Ronald James ARNDT, 19, will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Karl Holtkamp officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Prayers for a Christian Wake will be conducted tonight, Monday, at 7:30 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home.

ARNDT was instantly killed in a traffic accident near Oskaloosa early Saturday morning. He was a passenger in a car driven by Russell A. Gjovig, 20, Fairfield, who was also instantly killed in the headon crash.

James E. Long, 20, Des Moines, driver of the other car involved, was seriously injured.

Last rites for Russell Gjovig will also be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Memories in West Waterloo.

Ronald J. ARNDT was born Sept. 25, 1964, in Fairfield, the son of James and Theresa McINERNEY ARNDT. He was reared and educated in the Fairfield Community and graduated from the Fairfield Community High School with the Class of 1972. He would have been a junior student at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City this fall.

He had been employed for the past three summers with the Iowa Highway Commission in the construction department and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents he is survived by two brothers, Eric, a Rotary exchange student in South Africa, and Karl at home; also three sisters, Susan, Christie and Jennifer all at home.

Grandparents surviving include Mr. and Mrs. A.J. ARNDT, Fairfield, and Mrs. Agnes McINERNEY, Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Francis McINERNEY.
