Fairfield man killed in two-car accident

BRIGHTON -- A Fairfield man was killed and three other persons were injured in a two-vehicle collision about 6:15 p.m. Friday at the junction of Highway 1 and county road W-21 one and a half miles west of Brighton.

Edward Charles ANGSTEAD, 73, Route 1, driver of one of the cars, was pronounce dead at the scene by the Washington County medical examiner.

Those injured include Karen Reighard, 30, rural Brighton, passenger in the ANGSTEAD vehicle; Karen L. 37 and Mary Kathleen Seaton, 49, both of Washington. All three were taken to the Washington County Hospital by ambulance.

Later Reighard and Karen Seaton were transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City. Mary Kathleen Seaton remains a patient in the Washington County Hospital, where her condition was reported as serious but stable this morning.

Reighard was transferred later Friday night to Iowa City by Air Care Emergency helicopter. Her condition was reported as critical this morning.

Karen Seaton was taken to the hospital in Iowa City by ambulance where her condition is described as stable.

Washington County authorities said the ANGSTEAD car was traveling north on Highway W-21 from Pleasant Plain, and collided with the westbound Seaton car on Highway 1. Both cars were demolished.

Services for Edward Charles ANGSTEAD will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Raymond Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with military rites.

Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

ANGSTEAD was born Sept. 16, 1907 (sic - 1908), in Fairfield. He was the son of Raymond D. and Elizabeth Pearl ANDERSON ANGSTEAD.

His marriage to Mable SINGLETON took place Nov. 16, 1926. He later married Lucille ARCHER Aug. 19, 1950, in Moline, Ill. She died Dec. 7, 1970.

ANGSTEAD served in the military for eight years and was a veteran of World War II. He was a machinist at the Fairfield Engineering Co. before his retirement.

Survivors include six children: Delmar, Fairfield; Mrs. James HOSKINS, Lockridge; Mrs. Bert LITTON, Lockridge; Mrs. Donald SIMONS, Fairfield; Mrs. Dale CLINE, East Moline, Ill.; and Mrs. Harold GIBERSON, Stockport.

He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carl of Fairfield and Glen of Dennison, Texas; and two sisters, Mildred SHANER, Fairfield, and Mae NEWLON, Branson, Mo.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter and two brothers.
