Clyde DAVIS

Clyde LaVerne DAVIS, 84, of 710 Liberty Drive, Fairfield, died at 10:43 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, at the University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Raymond Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Wotherspoon officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to a charity to be chosen later by the family.

Mr. DAVIS was born March 23, 1921, at Mercer, Mo., the son of Eddie and Velma WILLFORD DAVIS. He married Doris Maida McCLEARY Sept. 14, 1940, in Lancaster, Mo.

He grew up and attended school in Missouri. The family moved to Batavia in 1937. He graduated from Batavia High School in 1939.

He and his wife lived in Cedar Rapids, where he worked for Collins Radio.

Mr. DAVIS joined the Army Air Corps in April 1943. He served with the 98th Bombardier Group of the 15th Air Force, Army Air Force. His plane was shot down over Vienna, Austria, and he was a POW from Feb. 21, 1945, until they were liberated on May 8, 1945.

He and his wife moved to Fairfield in 1952. They spent their winters in Yuma, Ariz., for 26 years.

He was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years in Batavia. He retired in October 1980.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Retired Rural Letter Carriers, American Legion, VFW, and the 15th Army, 98th Bomb Group, Iowa POW Association and Masons and former member of the Fairfield Lions Club.

He enjoyed music, traveling with his wife and attending family celebrations, attending grandchildren's school, church and sports activities. He also enjoyed flower gardening, photography and fishing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia JENKINS of Fairfield and Marilyn KELLER and husband Russ of Pekin, Ill.; one sister, June FISH of Denton, Texas; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Hester DAVIS.
