Ernest G. Bates, 94, of Douds, died at 1 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua, where he had resided since December.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Connie Markle and the Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Burial will be in Leando Cemetery in Douds.

Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church and left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 13983 172nd St. Douds 52551.

Mr. Bates was born March 3, 1911, near Selma, the son of Harry and Carrie Duke Bates. He married Norma Gilbert Feb. 25, 1939, in Ottumwa. She died June 11, 1992.

He grew up in the Selma community and attended Selma High School.

He was a farmer in the Douds area and a horse show fan.

He was affiliated with Christ United Methodist Church in Douds.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy McDonough and husband Ed of Douds and Connie Stewart of Cantril; one sister, LeAma Tallman of Floris; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Milton, Wayne, Bruce and Maynard Bates; four sisters, Cecil Lasley, Mabel Northup, Margaret Carr and Helen Tiller; and one grandson.
