One of the Pioneers.

Dr. Wesley J. GREEN died in this city early Saturday morning. He was one of five brothers--Wilson, Nelson, Sylvester and Alfred--who came to this county in the pioneer days, all of whom have now passed away. Dr. GREEN had been in ill health for a year or more past. He was born in Bedford county, Penn., May 5th, 1818, and grew to manhood there. He came to this county in 1840 and resided in the Richwoods settlement in Buchanan township until 1880, when he came to this city. In his earlier life he was a practicing physician, but most of his time was devoted to his farm. Dr. GREEN was married to Plantina (sic - Plantena) ALLENDER in 1843, and she died in 1870. Seven children by this marriage are yet living--Mrs. Loren CLARK and C. W. GREEN in this county, M. S. GREEN at Spencer, Mrs. C. S. CHANDLER at Stillwater, Okla., and P. O., Duane W. and E. O. GREEN at Mankato, Kan. All were at the father's funeral except Mrs. CHANDLER. In 1874 Mr. GREEN was again married, to Margaret FOOTE, who survives him. Few men have lived longer in Jefferson county than Dr. GREEN and few have more generally commanded the respect and esteem of their fellows. A member of the Methodist Episcopal church from boyhood, he followed its teachings closely and was active in all its good works. Funeral services were held in this city Monday afternoon under the direction of Rev. Thos. Osborn and the body was interred in the Richwoods cemetery.
