Mary Ann GEORGE was born in Delaware county, Indiana, Dec. 3d, 1824, and was married to Ephriam BATES, May 21st, 1846; died June 17th, 1900, aged 76 years 7 month and 5 days (sic).
She obeyed the gospel a number of years since and united with the Christian church in Fairfield, of which she has been a faithful and consistent member at all times. Her life was one of unselfish devotion to her family and children under all circumstances. Her end was most peaceful, and she called for all her children on last Friday to come to her, which they did, and she exhorted and comforted them by her faith and assurance of her hope in the future life. She said, "God is with me every moment and all is well. I long to go home."
Monday, June 18th, at 10:00 a.m. the funeral took place from Prairie Chapel, Rev. Leander Lane, her pastor, preaching a sermon from Revelations 14:13, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
The sons and daughters with their children and her grand and great grandchildren, which are many, with many other relatives, assembled to fill up a considerable portion of the church. Only a part of the audience could gain admittance into the house.
She died at the home of her son, Perry BATES, near the church from which she was buried. The interment took place at Richwoods cemetery beside her husband, who died some ten years since (sic - in 1887). A large funeral train followed the deceased to her last resting place.
