FairfieldBetty Elaine McNIEL, 98, of Fairfield and formerly of Batavia, IA passed away Friday, July 12, 2019 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Fairfield after several years of poor health. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019 at the Batavia United Methodist Church with Pastor Kelly Peavey officiating.
Burial will be held in the Batavia Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019 at the church and last until the time of service. Memorial contributions in Betty's honor may be directed to the Batavia United Methodist Church. Friends may sign the online guestbook at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Betty Elaine BOYSEL was born June 8, 1921 in Jefferson County, IA to John and Myrtle CAVINESS BOYSEL of the Batavia area. She was the youngest of seven siblings and the last surviving. Betty graduated from Batavia High School with the class of 1938. On March 10, 1940 she married John Maurice McNIEL at a small wedding in Ottumwa, IA. They were married for 52 years until his passing on August 12, 1992. To their union two sons were born, Darrell and Alan. In addition to being a full time homemaker, she also did clerical work for a local bank, the post office, and Farmer's Telephone Company for many years. The Batavia Methodist Church was a very important part of her life. She was very active in the church, serving as pianist, organist and choir director for many years. She was an excellent cook and a gifted seamstress.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, John Maurice McNIEL, and six siblings, Paul BOYSEL, Carl BOYSEL, Henry BOYSEL, Maude BOYSEL, Thurley HIXSON, and Evelyn BENDER.
Left to share her story are her two sons, Darrell (Jill) McNIEL of Davenport, IA and Alan (Judy) McNIEL of Batavia, IA; three grandchildren, Craig (Linda) McNIEL, Sherri (Matthew) SHOE, and Kara PHELPS; seven great grandchildren, Amelia, Olivia, Madison, Emma, Abby, Caleb, and Noah, as well as many extended family and friends.
