Green Valley, AZJoy McGIFFIN ECKERT passed away in Green Valley, AZ on December 23rd. Joy was born May 24, 1926, in Evanston, IL to Josephine and Charles GREY. She was named Carol Josephine but was immediately nicknamed Joy (to offset their disappointment in her not being a boy) and was called Joy all her life. Her childhood home was Evanston, but she graduated from Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, and then attended the University of Chicago until her marriage to Jim McGIFFIN of Fairfield, IA.
The McGIFFIN family moved to Ellensburg, WA in 1958 when Jim and Joy purchased the Ellensburg Daily Record newspaper. In 1963 they moved to Red Bluff, CA and in the years following owned and operated daily newspapers in California, Washington and Iowa. Joy was the recipient of numerous Washington Press Women and national awards for her journalism.
Beginning in 1982 the McGIFFINs spent extended periods each year in Green Valley, AZ, until Jim's death in Santiago de Compostella, Spain. Joy and Gene ECKERT of Ellensburg were married in 1991 and became full time residents of Green Valley. They traveled extensively, and included their family as much as possible in their international explorations.
Joy is survived by her husband Gene; her son Todd (Loretta) McGIFFIN and daughter Janet McGIFFIN, her sister-in-law Chris GREY and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Joy also included as her family Gene's sons Tim (Marcia) and Tom (Robin) ECKERT. She was preceded in death by her sister Margaret, brother Charles, daughter Margery, grandson Ty and graddaughter Ginger.
As she wished there will be no memorial services.
Published in Daily Record, Ellensburg, Washington from Dec. 27 to Dec. 29, 2018.
