ORVILLE CONGAR (sic - CONGER)

Orville Edward CONGER, 92, of Fairfield, IA passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at his home. A visitation, with the family present, will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the Cranston Family Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Masonic Funeral Rites will begin at 1:15 at the funeral home. As were Orville's wishes his body will be cremated following the visitation, with burial to be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in Orville's honor may be directed to the Batavia Masonic Lodge or the Libertyville Faith United Methodist Church. Orville Edward CONGER was born February 9, 1926 in a log cabin in Bankend, Saskatchewan, Canada to James Edward and Verna RAHAM CONGER. When Orville was young his father moved to Iowa in search of work. Shortly after Verna followed, bringing Orville and the rest of the family on the train.

Orville would call Iowa home from that day forward. He attended school in Libertyville, Batavia, and Delta before entering the workforce to help support the family. He began working as a truck driver, hauling mainly gravel, lime, and fertilizer. His first job turned into a career that saw many loads hauled over the next 52 years. Orville also had a passion for farming and worked a second job raising row crops and cattle. Orville was married for a short time early in life and became the proud father to a son, Russell.

He later met Ulala GARRELS. The two began their story together as husband and wife on June 1, 1957 at the Little Brown Church. They settled in Libertyville where their daughter, Nanette was born. They spent 22 years in Libertyville before moving to the farm in Fairfield. Orville continued to drive a truck until 2001 when his health forced him to retire. He remained busy on the farm caring for the crops, the cows, his dogs, and the cat. Orville also served on the Soil Conservation Board, was a long-time member of the Batavia Masonic Lodge Kilwinning #198 and the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and attended Faith United Methodist Church in Libertyville.

When Orville found time to step away from work, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as a good game of cards. He and Ulala loved to travel and saw many sites throughought the United States. Orville had an ornery personality, a contagious laugh and a love for life. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Vern CONGER and Irma ELSE.

Left to share his story is his loving wife of 61 years, Ulala; two children, Russell (Lynn) CONGER of Birmingham, IA and Nanette (Ken) EVERLY of Batavia, IA; a sister, Velma VAUGHN of Kansas, as well as five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many extended family and friends.

Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Batavia Cemetery in Batavia, IA for Orville Edward CONGER who passed away January 1, 2019.
