Gladys Elaine FITE was born on November 12, 1926 in rural Van Buren County to Fredrick and Opal AKERMAN POOL. She grew up as so many of that generation did, learning the value of hard work and lending a helping hand. In her early years she attended several rural country schools in Van Buren County. During this time, she met a young many by the name of Howard FITE.

On April 22, 1944 at the Floris Parsonage, they began their journey together as husband and wife. Together they became the loving parents of two children, Dennis and Randy. Gladys gracefully balanced the job of homemaker, farmhand, and mother. She worked alongside Howard on the farm, caring for the livestock and driving tractors, only to park the tractor in enough time to have lunch ready by noon.

Gladys also worked outside the home for several years at the Hughes Grocery Store in Eldon, as well as selling AVON and keeping the records for the Bethlehem Cemetery. While there was always something to be done, she took it in stride, always making time for her family. When she took time for herself, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing, quilting, and cooking. She was a member of the Living Hope Bible Church where she spent many years organizing and cooking for their funeral luncheons.

Gladys was a loving mother who enjoyed nothing more than becoming a grandmother and great grandmother. She didn't waste a moment of the 92 years she was given and will be deeply missed by her family and the many friends she made along the way.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Howard (d. 2005), and four siblings, Eva MILLER, Wes POOL, Margaret BAILEY, and Don POOL.

Left to share her story are her two sons, Dennis (Cheryl) FITE of Fairfield, IA and Randy (Sheila) FITE of Bloomfield, IA; one sister, Kathryn WELLER of Keosauqua, IA, as well as five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and many extended family and friends.
