Kenneth Robert SIMMONS was born April 1, 1938 in Fairfield, IA to Karl and Letha ROBERTS SIMMONS. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Fairfield, where he graduated with the class of 1956. Shortly after graduation, Ken volunteered for active duty with the Army National Guard and worked as a medic with the 133rd Infantry Regiment in Fairfield. His time in the Army National Guard also led him to meet Joyce BUCK.
The two were married on September 4, 1981 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Shortly after their marriage, Ken retired from service at the rank of Master Sergeant. During his career with the Army National Guard, Ken also worked at Parson's (sic) College and then as a corrections officer at Oakdale Correctional Facility. He then went on to become a prison transport guard for the Iowa Department of Corrections, retiring in 1994. Ken and Joyce worked together running Iowa City Pawn and Military Surplus while living on his family farm near Fairfield.
They retired in 2000 and spent time traveling to see Joyce's family in Georgia. Ken had a love for animals. He and Joyce opened their home to care for the pets from the Noah's Ark Animal Shelter while the new facility was being built as well as having many four-legged family members of their own.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents. Left to share his story is his loving wife, Joyce SIMMONS of Fairfield, IA; a son, Charles (Beth) SIMMONS of Murphysboro, IL; a grandson, Bryan and great grandson, Spencer, as well as extended family that include the many friends he met along the way.
