George Howell, the veteran harness maker of Fairfield, Died Sunday afternoon about 2 o’clock.....Born in Washington County, Penn., 24 Aug. 1824, lived there until 1838 doing various kinds of work and being employed in a tan yard. Then went to Zanesville, Ohio, walking all the way, and soon after began to learn the harness makers’ trade with William Shaffer later of Fairfield.....When the gold fever came he started (from West Wellington, Mo.) on May 12 1849, with a company of 100 or more men in an ox train for California.....The gold he panned out proved to be worth $1200 or $1400.....In 1854 Mr. Howell came to Fairfield where he has since resided. He opened a harness shop here soon after his arrival and the business has been conducted up to the present time. Married Kate Mount; wife and three children have preceded him in death. Survived by two sons, Edward A. Howell of Derwood, Maryland, and Harry Howell of this city.
