DARCY CHRISTINE MELLEN-SULLIVAN
Naples, FL

Darcy MELLEN-SULLIVAN, age 67 from Naples, FL and Grosse Pointe, MI passed away peacefully at home with her family on March 16th after the return of breast cancer which she battled valiantly for seven years.

She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Marni MELLEN and was raised in Fairfield, Iowa.

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Foreign Languages from Parsons College and earned a master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Drake University. After graduate school, she spent 11 years as a member of the team that developed a computerized counseling programs (sic) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Her love for foreign language began in high school where she participated in AFS exchange programs in both Spain and Belgium. She turned this passion into a career teaching French in Eldon, IA and growing into a role as the Executive Director of the French American Chamber of Commerce in Michigan.

She also spent many years as the bilingual counselor for the French Back-to-Back program in Grosse Pointe, MI, overseeing an exchange program to France for fifth grade students. She also hosted exchange students that quickly became part of her extended family. As a result of her exchange programs she developed lifelong friendships across the globe.

Her passion for the theater began in high school as part of the stage crew and later in life, she was a regular patron of the theaters in the cities where she lived or visited. One time in London, she saw three performances in one day.

In addition to her passion for languages, theater, art and travel, Darcy adored the ocean with 700 scuba dives around the world. The many throughout the world that knew her were touched by her wit, humor, kindness, smile and eagerness to help others. She was the sort of person who never met a stranger!

Darcy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 47 years, John R. "Jack" SULLIVAN, her son John R. SULLIVAN III, daughter-in law Katie and grandsons Rory and Liam of Cooper City, Florida, along with dozens of other family members throughout the country.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 29th at the Beach House at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. Memorials can be made in Darcy's name to Susan G. Komen Southwest Florida for Metastatic Breast cancer at https://ww5.komen.org/ or to the Reef Environmental Education Foundation at www.REEF.org/contribute.
