Matthew James GAUMER

Matthew James GAUMER, 28, of Des Moines, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Interstate 80 near Colfax.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines, 3700 Cottage Grove Ave., which is near Drake University. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery. A reception will be held following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Matt GAUMER Memorial Fund. Caldwell-Raddatz Funeral Service, Hickman Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. GAUMER was born March 3, 1971, in Fairfield, the son of Stewart C. Jr. and Barbara SANKEY GAUMER. He married Amy S. CARTER July 1, 1995, in Columbia, Mo.

GAUMER graduated from Fairfield High School in 1989 and Drake University in 1993. He earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa in May 1999. He did his research for his master's at Mount Everest Base Camp in April 1998. He was employed as a teacher at University of Iowa in the Department of Sports and Leisure. He lived in Iowa City for four years before moving to Des Moines a year ago.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Drake University Alumni, University of Iowa Alumni and Theta Chi Fraternity. He was an active volunteer for Crisis Center in Iowa City; as co-facilitator at A Ray of Hope, a suicide support group in Iowa City; and World Dynamics, a nonprofit organization.

Survivors include his wife; his father of Fairfield; his mother of Fairfield; one brother, David GAUMER of Naples, Fla.; and grandparents, Stewart Sr. and Virginia GAUMER of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Rich LaRue GAUMER; and grandparents David SANKEY, and Andrew and Mary Jane POCHNA.
