George R. Swearingen, 82, of Sigourney, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at his home.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sigourney United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Hembry officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney.

Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Swearingen was born Jan. 8, 1923, in Winfield, the son of George and Priscilla Bretz Swearingen. He married Marian Smith June 18, 1949, in Maywood, Ill.

He graduated from Winfield High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University, where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

Mr. Swearingen taught vocational agriculture at Sigourney Community Schools for 27 years, retiring in 1976.

He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1979 to 1988.

He was a member of Sigourney United Methodist Church, 50-year member of Webb Lodge 182 A.F. & A.M., where he was past master, 50-year member of Aspasi Chapter 198 OES, where he was past patron, member of Kaaba Shrine, Consistory and an honorary member of Alpha Zeta.

His pastimes were spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren play sports and fixing things.

Survivors include his wife of Sigourney; two daughters, Sue Marie Swearingen of Iowa City and Barbara Goodale and husband David of West Chester, Pa.; one son, George "Bob" Swearingen Jr. and wife Gina of Sigourney; seven grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Hanson of Ventura, Calif.; and one brother, Donald Dean Swearingen of Waukee.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
