Dixie Arlene Laire, 47, of Red Oak, died at home Sat., Jan. 29. She had suffered with rheumatoid arthritis from the age of three. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak, with burial of ashes to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak.
Born December 11, 1957 in Corning, Ia., Dixie spent her childhood on a farm east of Sciola, north of Villisca. She graduated from Villisca Community Schools in 1975 and attended Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny, Ia. She lived a few years in Ottumwa, Ia., Macon, Mo., and Pella, Ia., before relocating to Red Oak in 1987.
Dixie had a passion for genealogy. She researched extensively and shared - contributing to the historical background of the Tefft Ferry House, Elliott, Ia., and to the collections of the Montgomery County Historical Society. The family suggests memorials be directed to: Tefft Ferry House, C/O Betty M. Sanny, Cass County Mormon Trails Association, PO Box 216, Lewis IA 51544; the Montgomery County Historical Society, PO Box 634, Red Oak IA 51566; or the Arthritis Foundation.
Preceding Dixie in death were: her father, Mervin Laire, in 1994; her mother, Helen (Miller) Laire, in 1967; and her grandparents, Harry and Essie (Wilson) Laire and William H. and Violet (Johannes) Miller.
Surviving are: Dixie’s brother and his wife, Steve and Rita Laire, Omaha, Nebr.; a nephew, SSG Steven Laire, his wife, Cindi, Autumn and Rebecca, Dixon, Mo.; a niece, Wendy (Laire) and Tommy Dunkin, Dawson and Delaney, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and, a nephew, Joshua Laire, his wife, Tatum, Kindyl, Kinzie, Kalyn and Keyton, Excelsior Springs. Other survivors include numerous cousins and her aunts and uncles: Margaret and Newell Laire, Stennett; Awanda Woods, Red Oak; Jean and Bill Miller, Wimberly, Tex.; and, JoAnn Miller, Villisca.
