Katharine Morgan HANNA transitioned from this life at home on October 9th 2017, of complications from pulmonary infections. Friends will gather to celebrate Katherine's (sic) final Vedic ritual, a pre-cremation ceremony and cremation this Thursday, October 12th from 5:00 to 6:30 at Behner Funeral Home, 203 South Main St.
Katharine was born August 20, 1944, at Boston Ma. She grew up in Medford Ma., and attended the Medford Public Schools, and The Buckingham School in Cambridge. She later attended and graduated from Lake Erie College near Cleveland. Katharine was active in civil rights protests in college, and took up the challenge of service to the nation proposed by President Kennedy, by serving in Vista. Her posting was in Tucson Az. where she worked with mostly Latino and Native American families and youth. Moving to California after Vista, Katharine worked in Montessori schools, and became interested in Transcendental Meditation (TM). She later became a teacher of TM, taking her training in Majorca Spain.
Meditation and its beneficial influences for humankind became her life mission for the next few decades. She ran TM centers in a number of cities, and initiated hundreds of people into the meditation. Katharine always sought to uplift her own consciousness and that of the community at large. Katharine is remembered by her many friends as soft spoken, intuitive, deeply spiritual and a shining light.
Katharine also became a paralegal where her keen attention to detail showed in the quality of her work.
About 7 years ago, Katharine was re-united with her high school sweetheart, Charles Spencer, after more than 50 years apart. Charles and Katharine travelled together the path of Katharine's last year. Katharine's desire to explore her artistic inclinations led to their collaboration in her evolution as a wonderful photographer. Her photos have a wide following on Flickr, and may be viewed under her name. They spent their time over this since reuniting living in Tucson, Asheville NC and Fairfield Iowa.
As Katharine's physical challenges became more pronounced, Charles cared for Katharine with incredible devotion over the last few years. Katharine is preceded in her transition by her mother Dorothea MacMILLAN HANNA, her father William Sidney HANNA, her sister Margaret HOUSE and her niece, Jessica "Molly" HANNA. She is survived by her partner Charles Spencer, her brother Douglas HANNA and his wife Carol Simone, niece Bridget HANNA, nephew William HANNA, niece Iah HOUSE, nephew Andrew JOHNSTON and grand-nephew Rowan McGILL.
