OBITUARY.

Ruth ECKLES was born in Brook county, Virginia, July 17, 1840; and passed to her reward August 23, 1916--just past her 76th birthday. While yet a young girl her parents moved to Ripley county, Indiana. Her father was a Presbyterian elder and his teachings greatly influenced her life. Consequently, she was converted when 15 or 16 years old and joined the Presbyterian church. She came to Jefferson county, Iowa, in 1854, and has lived in this vicinity ever since. She was united in marriage to Josiah GARMOE December 24, 1865. Mr. GARMOE, being a Methodist, she with him joined the Methodist church of which she has since been a faithful and consistent member. When she married Mr. GARMOE he was caring for his two motherless children, and she came into the home and became all that any mother could be to these children; so that they think of her as their own mother and mourn her loss as such.

There was born to this union one child, a daughter, Adda J., who has cared for her parents in the home for several years past. Mrs. GARMOE was desirous that her children should all develop a strong christian character, which desire she lived to see gratified, and in which her own influence was a large factor. She had great affection for all her old neighbors and friends, and many of these friends of former years were present at the funeral.

The GARMOE home was always open to the preachers, as they went between their appointments on Sundays, or visited in the neighborhood during the week.

They came to Fairfield to make their home in 1901, on account of the failing health of Mrs. GARMOE. Since that time she has been gradually failing and soon became unable to perform even her household duties. Sh (sic) has also been deprived of her church privilges (sic), not having attended the services for the past six years. But she was just as interested in, and devoted to the church as ever. She was confined to her bed for six weeks preceeding her death, with a complication of diseases. And during all those long weary weeks her faith never wavered. When in the midst of the most severe pain, she was asked by her pastor if it was all right with her soul. She replied, "It is all right.'

The funeral services were held at the home August 26, 1916, in charge of her pastor, Rev. Wilbur R. Keesey, assisted by the Rev. W. G. Thorne, a close friend for the past twenty-six years, and a former pastor. Rev. Thorne spoke very feelingly of the worth of Mrs. GARMOE's character, and at her request read the twentieth chapter of Revelation.

Mrs. GARMOE leaves, besides her husband, a daughter, Adda J., and two step-children, William D. GARMOE and Mrs. C. B. McPEEK, all of Fairfield, Iowa.
