Lel NEWLON Sr.

Nogales, AZ

Lel NEWLON Sr., age 79, passed peacefully on May 25, 2017 at his daughter's home in Nogales, Arizona, after a battle with cancer. Born February 12, 1938 in Fairfield,Iowa ,he was the son of Emert and Leona Mae ANGSTEAD NEWLON . He married Barbara FRITTZ (sic - FRITZ) ,they later divorced. He married Sharri DOOLIN.His last marrage was to Sharon DZIEDZIC lasting 42 years.

Mr.NEWLON graduated from Fairfield High School in 1956 and Parsons College excelling in sports before losing a arm in a car accident ended his athletic career.

He loved restoring old cars and had a large collection. He attended many car shows, parades and auctions with family and friends.

He started his career in education in Illinois ,he moved to Young, Arizona in 1980 .There he co-founded Arizona Rural Schools Association, served as Vice-President, then President and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2000. In 1988 he moved to Nogales, Arizona as the superintendent of Little Red School. He created an outdoor sports area that was cool enough for the children to play in the Arizona heat adding track and field, volleyball, and basketball. Among his many achievements at Little Red, he started county and book fairs, a Halloween parade and a Christmas program. At his retirement, a Lel Newlon Plaza was dedicated to him sporting a beautiful bronze plaque immortalizing his image.

He suffered from 'Stubborn Man Syndrome'. Oddly, this stay-with-it-no-matter-what attitude is what allowed the one-armed educator to accomplish so much in life.

He is survived by one brother Larry NEWLON and one sister Lea MATTHEWS and his 5 children, Lel NEWLON Jr, Terri NEWLON, Mark NEWLON, Dawn SINGLETON, and Ward STOGDILL and an honorary daughter that called him 'Daddy Lel', Cindy McClellan.
