Iowa Rep. Curt HANSON dies

HANSON was driver's ed instruction for 43 years, named Teacher of the Year
by Nicole Major,
Ledger staff writer

Rep. Curtis D. HANSON, a retired teacher and tireless proponent for education and water and soil conservation, who was known for saying that he wanted to "improve the lives of regular people," died this morning at his home.

HANSON, who was 73, had served as an Iowa State Representative since 2009. HANSON served District 82, which includes Fairfield, Keosauqua and Bloomfield. He was re-elected to the seat in 2014.

He won the seat the first time with the goal of improving the lives of the middle class in Iowa.

Prior to that, he taught driver's education for the Fairfield Community School District for 43 years.

"It's hours of boredom, marked by moments of shear terror," HANSON jokingly told The Ledger during a 2014 interview. However, HANSON admitted that his teaching career was neither boring nor terrifying.

During his tenure as a teacher, HANSON received the Fairfield Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator Award, was named Fairfield Teacher of the Year in 1994 and he was runner-up for the National Driver Education Teacher of the Year Award.

HANSON grew up in a farming family in a rural Iowa town near Swea City.

He held a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa.

He moved to Fairfield to teach and married his wife Diane, who was also a teacher. HANSON was married to Diane for 48 years.

The HANSONs raised their family in Fairfield. They have a daughter and a son and four grandchildren.

In addition to his role as an educator, HANSON served the community in a variety of ways.

He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association. During his career he had served as the president of Iowa Association of Safety and Education and had also served as the president of the Fairfield Education Association. HANSON was a Fairfield Kiwanis member and a member of the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

"My heart goes out to Curt's wife and family," said Fairfield resident Paul Gandy. "Curt was a model state representative and friend. I will miss him greatly."

Funeral arrangements are pending at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
