LaVerne SEDORE

LaVerne Martin SEDORE was born April 4, 1922 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the eldest of what would be four children of Ralph and Helen (JOHNSTON) SEDORE. He lead (sic) a wonderfully productive and full life as a Believer, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, farmer, soldier and friend before passing to a better home on April 14, 2017 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown (note: in Marshall Co., IA).

The family will welcome visitors from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday, April 24 at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, April 25 at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield with a lunch to follow. Interment will be at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery in Marshalltown.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ulery West Recreation Fund, Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, IA 50158.

LaVerne grew up on the family's farm graduating from Agency High School in the spring of 1940. He worked at the John Morrell packing plant in Ottumwa before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps on October 12, 1942. He was deployed with the 493rd Bomb Group of the famed 8th Air Force to Debach, England in January 1945. As copilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress, he flew 25 combat missions in the European Theatre. His most memorable missions, though, were two days of dropping food to the starving citizens of The Netherlands. He was discharged from military service on October 15, 1945.

Upon returning home Verne farmed in the Wapello and Jefferson Counties area. He also met a tall, dark-haired beauty named Roberta Madeline ALLISON. They were married on August 22, 1948. Their marriage was blessed by three children and nearly 39 years of wonderful life before Roberta's passing in August 1987. Verne retired from farming in 1984 and then drove a contract mail route for eight years. He continued helping others in Fairfield by volunteering for several organizations.

LaVerne was preceded in death by his mother and father, wife Roberta, sister Pat FRIEBERG, brother-in-law, Raymone RUPE and sister-in-law Jean SEDORE. He is survived by his children Alan (Phyllis) SEDORE of Schleswig, Carolyn (Steve) MEYER of Stillwater, OK and Jo (Deon) LEICHTY of Crawfordsville, brother John "Wayne" (Shirley), sister Thelma RUPE, as well as seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many very dear nieces and nephews.

LaVerne lived his last few years at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. His family asks all Iowans to join them in thanking the dedicated IVH staff that provided marvelous care for LaVerne.
