Frances McCANN CANTWELL

Frances McCANN CANTWELL passed away peacefully on July 9 in Fairfield, Iowa. She was 102 and was generous, good-natured, and compassionate all her days. Frances was born in Seale, Alabama to Mary BENTON McCANN and Richard Bennett McCANN, M.D. on February 8, 1914.

Frances loved learning from an early age and on the court or field, excelled in basketball in high school and soccer in college in spite of her petite stature. She was a graduate of the Seale schools, Wesleyan College, and Columbia University. She was a librarian on the faculties of Bennington College, LSU, and LRU/UALR and was honored at retirement as professor emerita. She and Leon Roy CANTWELL of Winnfield, LA were married at the Washington Square Methodist Church in New York City during the War. Frances and Leon and their daughters moved to Little Rock in 1955.

After hearing a single sermon by Dr. Kenneth Shamblin of Pulaski Heights Methodist Church, Frances knew she had found her church home. She served the Church and community for 61 years.

She enjoyed living at Parkway Village until moving in 2012 to live with daughter Edna and son-in-law Mark. They made their home hers. She received excellent, compassionate care at the Jefferson County (Iowa) Health Center during the final week of her life.

Frances is survived by daughters Mary CANTWELL of Little Rock, Edna KIRBACH of Fairfield, Iowa, son-in-law Mark, granddaughter Katy of Chicago, and grandson Jonathan of Phoenix. She is also survived by loving nieces, a nephew, and cousins.

A service celebrating Frances's life will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church Foundation, 4823 Woodlawn Drive, Little Rock, AR 72205; the Seale, Alabama United Methodist Church, 6 Chapel Street, Seale, AL 36785; the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, 1400 West Markham, #304, Little Rock, AR 72201; and the Fairfield Public Library, 104 West Adams, Fairfield, IA 52556.
