Lloyd C. BARNES, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, March 22, 2016, in the emergency room of Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will begin after noon Friday at the memorial chapel, with family present from 5-7 p.m. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the memorial chapel.

Lloyd C. BARNES, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, March 22, 2016, in the emergency room of Mercy Hospital in Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Visitation began at noon today at the memorial chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m.

Lloyd Calvin BARNES was born April 12, 1926, in Nebraska, the son of Charles Bryant and Ethel MANNING BARNES. He married Norma Darlene NELSON April 12, 1944, in Wichita, Kansas. She died June 28, 1982. He married Frances LAWRENCE March 4, 1989, in Ottumwa. She died June 23, 2000.

Mr. BARNES received his education from rural schools.

He was a lifelong agriculturist who kept his land immaculate. He farmed for more than 60 years in Henry County and in Van Buren Couty near Stockport.

In his younger years, he enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles. He trained horses, liked to run a bull-dozer for excavating projects, and was recognized as a skilled mechanic. He used his mechanical talents to restore tractors and bull-dozers.

Mr. BARNES served on the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Board of Directors.

He served four years in the U.S. Armed Forces and during his service, he built roads in Alaska.

Survivors include: one son, Layne BARNES and wife Judy of Mt. Pleasant; one daughter, Brenda GONZALEZ and husband Tony of Mt. Pleasant; two stepdaughters, Roberta BORDERS and husband Ed of Rosamond, California, and Rita MULLIN and husband Rick of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; special friend, Elaine Tweedy; three brothers, Charles Allen, Eddie Wayne and Roger; and one sister, Alda.

In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers, Dennis, Frank, Chauncey and Melvin; and three sisters, Bessie, Mildred and Ardith.
