Carol M. COON

Carol M. COON, 86, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, June 1, 2015, at Washington County Hospital following a short illness.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Presbyterian Church in Columbus Junction, with the Rev. Dennis COON and the Rev. Christian Coon officiating. Interment will be at Columbus City Cemetery in Columbus Junction (note: in Louisa Co., IA).

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with the family present from 5-7 p.m. at Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington.

Memorials have been established for the American Heart Association and Washington County Hospice. Online condolences can be sent to the family through the website at www.jonesfh.com.

Mrs. COON was born Jan. 21, 1929, near Winfield in Louisa County, the daughter of Edward Wilson and Imo Ivalue "Ivy" DILL FULLERTON. She married Robert J. COON Dec. 24, 1944, at United Presbyterian Church Manse in Columbus Junction.

She attended Shellbark Country School and graduated from Columbus Junction High School.

She lived in Washington, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant, returning to Washington in 2006.

She worked for the Jefferson County Ambulance Service as an EMT and paramedic. She later worked for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a certified nurses aide and then for Iowa City Hospice.

She was a member of Cotter Presbyterian Church, Shellbark Club and the First United Methodist Church Mission Community Quilting Group in Mt. Pleasant.

She participated in and led several church Bible study groups. She was very active with the American Heart Association and received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Iowa Heart Association. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed quilting and making clothes for her family. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed taking care of her flowers. She loved to cook, bake and decorate cakes.

Survivors include her husband, Bob COON of Washington; four sons, John Daniel COON of Iowa City, David COON and wife Lynn of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, the Rev. Dennis COON and wife Patty of Des Moines, and Dr. Thomas COON and wife Rhonda of Stillwater, Oklahoma; two daughters, Cathy KLEESE and husband John of Washington, and Cynthia GIANNINI and husband Joe of Mount Vernon; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and five siblings, Frank FULLERTON, Evelyn LONG, Lavon "Sam" FULLERTON, Bonnie RAID and Catherine STORY.
