Reverend Fred P. Reischl, 85, died March 4, 2013, at the Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance on Thursday, March 7 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6 at St. Peter's Catholic Church with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Father Reischl attended St. Paul's High School, Defiance. After military service he attended Conception College and Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1955, at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines.
He served as Assistant Pastor at St. Ambrose Cathedral. He then served as Assistant Pastor at Holy Family in Council Bluffs, St. Joseph in Des Moines, St. Francis in Council Bluffs, Holy Trinity in Des Moines. He then became Pastor at Sacred Heart in Woodbine, St. Mary's in Panama, St. Patrick's in Audubon, Holy Trinity in Exira, St. Patrick's in Corning, St. Patrick' in Dunlap, Sacred Heart in Woodbine, Queen of Apostles in Council Bluffs, Sacred Heart in Chariton and St. Francis in Corydon, St. Mary's in Avoca and St. Patrick's in Walnut. In 1968, he was the Diocesan Director of Catholic Rural Life for one year. He retired in the year 2000, and after a year in West Des Moines, moved to Fox Run in Council Bluffs, where he lived until his most recent move to Little Flower Haven.
He will be remembered as a priest who had a great love for the scriptures. His Bibles were all underlined and he quoted from them extensively. He had a great sense of humor and was known for his clever sayings. He was dedicated to the people in the parishes where he served as well as to his own family. He kept up on current events and would comment on them.
Father Reischl is survived by his sister, Cecilia (Harry) Kleffman; his brother, Norbert (Nonie) Reischl; his sister, Leona (Don) Smith; his sisters-in-law, Mary Kay (Joe) Reischl and Irene (Ed) Reischl and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Joe and Ed and his sister, Mary Ann (Steve). Special thanks to the staff at Fox Run and the Little Flower Haven and his niece Shelly Wickersham.
Memorials may either be Masses or Contributions to the Priest Pension Fund of the Diocese of Des Moines.
