Kasondra Kay JOHNSTON

Loving mother, devoted wife, and artist Kasondra Kay JOHNSTON passed away on Thursday, January. 22 (sic) under hospice care at the age of 65 in her home in Falls Church, Virginia.

Kasondra was born January 5, 1950 in Coldwater, Michigan, moved to California with her family in 1965, and graduated from La Serna HS in Whittier in 1968. She later attended Long Beach City College where she met her husband, Steven C. JOHNSTON of Fairfield, Iowa. Kas and Steve moved from California to Falls Church, Virginia in 1981 where their children, Stefanie and Todd were born.

She earned a B.S. in Information Systems from the University of Maryland in 1980 and later, a Masters in Transportation Policy from George Mason University in 2004. She worked as a Senior Urban Planner and Principal Realty Specialist at the Washington Metro Area Transportaiton Authority from 2004 until the onset of cancer in January of 2014.

In addition to working for state and regional transportation authorities, and raising a family, Kasondra was an avid lover of art, rekindling her own talents in 2008. She studied with a number of professional artists and her work has been displayed and sold at art shows in Falls Church, The Art League in Old Towne Alexandria, and Art at the Mill in Millwood, VA. Kas and Steve were planning to move to the Keosauqua area in early 2015 where she intended to establish her art studio and business.

Kasondra is survived by her husband, Steve; children, Stefanie and Todd; and her sister, Marsha REYNOLDS of Virginia Beach

A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held in Kasondra's honor at Murphy Funeral Homes, 1102 W. Broad Street, Falls Church, VA, 22046 on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. Her cremains will be laid to rest in the Lebanon, Iowa cemetery at a later date.

Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her name to charities listed online at www.MurphyFuneralHomes.com website.
