Rowena J. MATHIAS, 81, formerly of rural Birmingham, died at 7:35 a.m. today, Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Rowena MATHIAS

Rowena J. MATHIAS, 81, formerly of rural Birmingham, died at 7:35 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.

The funeral is set for 2 p.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery north of Douds.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with family present from 6-7:30 p.m.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family can be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 10719 Jasmine Ave., Birmingham, 52535.

Mrs. MATHIAS was born Feb. 19, 1933, in rural Selma, the daughter of Vern and Freda BROOKES LAGLE. She married Junior F. MATHIAS Sept. 4, 1948, in Davenport. He died Sept. 7, 2008.

Mrs. MATHIAS grew up in the Selma community and attended Selma High School. She and her husband lived and farmed many years in Lick Creek Township southwest of Birmingham, and she also worked as a cook at the Douds and Keosauqua centers of Van Buren Community School District.

Survivors include: one son, Richard Wayne MATHIAS and wife Gloria of Birmingham; one daughter, Sheila HAMLET and husband Grant of Salem, Missouri; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Larry LAGLE of Eldon.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Sherry Jean MATHIAS; one grandson; one infant granddaughter; and one sister, Catherine DOWNING.
