Richard 'Dick' ROACH

Richard Lee "Dick" ROACH, 78 of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, April 7, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A funeral is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will be at Forest Home Cemetery, with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard.

Visitation will be noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. A Masonic service will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant or the American Diabetes Association. On-line condolences can be left at www.olsonpowell.com.

Mr. ROACH was born Sept. 3, 1935, in Cantril, the son of Donald David and Isabelle SMITH ROACH. He married Janis Kay MALLAMS Jan. 21, 1956, at the Beulah Church.

He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1953.

For 40 years, Mr. ROACH served as a company commander and administrative officer with the 224th Engineer Battalion in the Iowa Army National Guard. He retired as a major in 1995. He also had worked for six years as a mechanic at Sheets Ford Motor Company in Mt. Pleasant. He worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown as a supervisor for 10 years. He was a member of the Henry County Sheriff's Posse from 1980-1991.

While his family was young, Mr. ROACH helped coach Little League baseball and was a scout master for Boy Scouts. Active in the community, he was a member of the volunteer fire department and served in the Henry County Honor Guard. He was a 50-year Mason, and he belonged to AMVETS and VFW. He belonged to First United Methodist Church where he served as a shepherd and was a member of the choir.

In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening and yard work. He especially enjoyed spending time on the family farm and on the Skunk River.

For the past 13 years, he and his wife wintered in Florida. They loved visiting and spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Don ROACH and wife Jana of Libertyville, Ryan ROACH and wife Amy of Denver, Iowa, and Curt ROACH and wife Heidi of Freeport, Fla.; one daughter, Angela SOTELO of Washington; Iowa; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Michael ROACH of Fort Madison; one sister, Pauline NOLL of Burlington; and four stepbrothers, Richard, Jim, Tony and David KELLEMS.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
