Ralph William ROE

Ralph William ROE, 82, of Fairfield, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

A funeral was at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles comfort officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery with military rites.

Visitation for family and friends was Sunday at Behner Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family or First Baptist Church.

Mr. ROE was born Dec. 5, 1931, in Iowa City, the son of Thomas A. and Edna DVORSKY ROE. He married Billie Joy FILKINS June 29, 1952. He married Evelyn "JoDee" EKSTROM March 22, 1976, in Columbia, Mo. She died Aug. 25, 2011.

He graduated from Iowa City High School and studied one year at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

He joined the Marine Corps in 1951 and served during the Korean War (sic - Korean Conflict).

After his discharge in 1954, he lived in California for 12 years where he was in the furniture business.

He moved to Ottumwa, and started his own car business. He had a Datsun Subaru dealership for three years and one car lot in Ottumwa before moving to Fairfield in 1976.

He opened a very successful car dealership in Fairfield known as "Ralph's Auto." It was the longest used car lot operated in the history of Fairfield with 40 years of service. Ralph's Auto closed when he retired in 1996.

While in Fairfield, he built several brick homes on Glasgow Road and the first earth home in Fairfield.

He loved the outdoors. Fishing was always number one with him.

Survivors include three children, Connie ALCANTAR and spouse Frank of Hillsboro, Ore., Thomas ROE and spouse Pat of Cedar Rapids and Michael ROE and spouse Marsha of Fairfield; fiancée, Sharon CARRIER of Fairfield; four stepchildren, Mark EKSTROM and spouse Paula, Terri Jo ERICKSON and spouse Larry and Craig EKSTROM all of Cedar Rapids, and Doug EKSTROM and spouse Kathy of Oil City, Pa., four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six siblings, James ROE of Ohio and Lawrence ROE, Delores WRIGHT, Ruth NEWGARD, Lorna JERRED and Mary CHECK, all of Cedar Rapids.

In addition to his second wife, he was preceded in death by hs parents; his first wife; one brother, Raymond ROE, and one grandson.
