Barbara Jean Whitney Muntz, 74, of Wichita, Kansas, and formerly of Van Buren County died Monday, March 15, 2004, at her daughter's home in Wichita.

The service of Commitment of the body for cremation was held Thursday at Hillside Mortuary, and the funeral was conducted at Countryside Christian Church in Wichita.

A memorial service will held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Birmingham United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.

Memorials have been established to The Lords Diner in Wichita and the Wichita Children's Home.

Mrs. Muntz was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Moline, Ill., the daughter of Hugh Calvin and Juanita Caterine Bartholomew Whitney. She married John Edgar Muntz July 17, 1950. He died July 18, 1957.

Mrs. Muntz lived in Van Buren County during her youth and mid-adult life. She attended grade school in Central before moving to Pittsburg, where she attended White No. 9 School through eighth grade. She graduated from Douds High School in 1946, then attended Drake University.

After her husband's death, she and her children moved to Birmingham, near her parents. She worked at the Fairfield Clinic as a nurse technician for 17 years.

She was dean of girls at Oakdale Christian High School in Jackson, Ky., from 1967-1969. She completed her degree in nursing at Indian Hills Community College in 1972. She moved to Knoxville in 1974 and worked as a registered nurse at the VA Hospital until 1980.

She then moved to Wichita and was employed by the American Red Cross until she retired in 1992.

During the early years of her retirement, Mrs. Muntz cared for her mother until she died in 2001.

She attended Countryside Christian Church and volunteered at The Lord's Diner and the Wichita Children's Home. She participated in four medical mission trips to Haiti.

Mrs. Muntz was a reader, bird watcher and a flower gardener.

Survivors include her children, John W. Muntz and wife Pat of Dexter, Kan., Adrienne C. Muntz of Wichita and Ruth E. Burk and husband Ray of Wichita; one brother, Howard Whitney of Whitefish, Mont.; three sisters, Doris Bradshaw of Galt, Calif., Donna Godwin of Sacramento, Calif., and Joyce Stokes of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
