Carol D. DeVORE, 89, of Batavia, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Grace Funeral Care in Batavia.

Carol D. DeVORE

Carol D. DeVORE, 89 of Batavia, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Funeral Care in Batavia, with the Rev. Danny Cary officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at Grace Funeral Care, where the family will be present from 4-6 p.m.

A memorial fund is being established to the Batavia Public Library.

Mr. DeVORE was born on Dec. 17, 1923, on his family's century farm near Batavia, the son of Guy Roy and Elsie Alida McCLEARY DeVORE. He married Marian Elaine GUSTAFSON Dec. 24, 1957, in Ozark, Mo.

He began his education in country school No. 7 in Locust Grove Township and later attended school in Cedar Rapids and Eldon.

He worked 38 years at Dexter in Fairfield while also raising cattle and hogs on the farm.

He was a lifetime member of the machinists' union.

He enjoyed feeding the birds, planting his vegetable garden and all varieties of trees.

He was an avid reader, and watched game shows and westerns on television.

He loved to attend auctions, and was known by his family as the original "American Picker."

Survivors include his wife Marian, living on the family century farm near Batavia; four children, Lois SHREVES and spouse Charles of Buffalo, Fredric DeVORE of Batavia, Sara SWANSON and spouse Kelley of Ottumwa, and Trisha DeVORE and spouse Tony SCHLEISMAN of Batavia; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene LILES of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Fern KIPER and Shearley McDOWELL; and six brothers Arlo, Dennis, Roy Forrest, Lowell, Donald and Paul.
