Howard Verlin JOHNSON, 95, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
A funeral is at 10:30 a.m., Friday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Todd Holman officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
Visitation for family and friends is 6-8 p.m., Thursday at Behner Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church. Cards and Memorials can be sent to 7553 S.W. 85th Drive, Gainesville, FL 32608.
Mr. JOHNSON was born Dec. 2, 1917, in the New Sweden area near Lockridge, the son of Chester Russell and Myrtle NELSON JOHNSON. He married Isabelle McGee WILEY May 5, 1940. She died Feb. 16, 2013.
His family lived on a farm. He went to local schools Harmony 5 and Glasgow. He graduated from Lockridge High School in 1936.
His first job was at the General Merchandise Store at Four Corners.
He and his wife first lived in Salina and moved to Fairfield in 1941.
After leaving the store at Salina, he worked for Brighton Creamery, then B.L.S., Brown Lynch Scott, as a store manager and later he owned Johnson Hardware Store located on the square. He retired in 1981.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was involved in various church activities.
He was a member of the Lions Club for 60 years and served as president from 1958-1959 and secretary for 18 years. He received Old Monarch, Coleman, Lion of the Year and Life member awards in Lions Club.
He was a member of Walton Club, the country club, Keep Young and Odd Fellow Lodge for 71 years. He served as Red Cross chairman. He was on the school board in 1960.
In 1960 he was voted Man of the Year and served as chamber of commerce president from 1958-1959.
He enjoyed watching TV sports, local games of golf, tennis and bowling, and loved to do woodworking. He golfed for 70 years and bowled. He was an avid Hawkeye fan.
In his years of marriage he and his wife traveled to Japan, Alaska, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and various places in the U.S.
In 1975, Mr. JOHNSON, Stan Maple and Wayne Klepinger founded the Howard Johnson Coffee Club. The coffee club still meets every morning during the week.
Survivors include two children, Jean LEDVINA and spouse Tim of Gainesville, Fla., and Howard JOHNSON and spouse Lois of Altoona; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Carroll.
