Dr. Barbara Jean CARTER

Dr. Barbara Jean CARTER, 66, of Iowa City, formerly of Stockport, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at home.

Her body has been cremated and burial of cremains will be at a later date.

Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials to Stockport Christian Church, Van Buren County Hospital, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 611 N. Main St., Stockport 52651.

Ms. CARTER was born May 8, 1947, in Fairfield the daughter of Allen Bruce and Alice Maree TETER CARTER.

She attended Spencer country school, Stockport High School; it consolidated, and she graduated from Van Buren Community High School in 1964. She was a star basketball player and softball pitcher.

She received a bachelor's of science (sic) degree in nursing at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1968. She joined Officer's Training in October 1966 while in college and entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served until January 1972, being discharged with the rank of captain.

She served in Stuttgart, Germany. While a member of the Army Nurse Corps Reserve she had written and presented various papers in conjunction with her work in the nurse corps and her dissertation for her doctorate at meetings in Washington, D.C., Dallas and London, England.

She retired from the U.S. Army Reserves with the rank of colonel.

In 1976, she received her master's of nursing (sic) from University of Washington in psychosocial nursing. In 1989, she received her doctor of nursing science at the University of California, San Francisco, in psychosocial oncology. She received a post doctoral fellowship in 1993 from the University of Pennsylvania and taught at Pacific Lutheran University, Loyola University, Chicago and University of Pennsylvania.

She was a cancer survivor, loved camping, Hawkeye woman's basketball and she played on a granny basketball team while living in Indianola.

She was a member of the Stockport Christian Church, the American Nurses Association and the Association for Humanistic Psychology.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert CARTER of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Richard CARTER of Indianola; and one sister, Ramona M. CLARK of Stockport.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William C. CARTER.

Military rites will be held at 11 a.m. May 8 at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is handling arrangements.
