Donald D. DICKINSON

Donald D. DICKINSON, 88, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Brighton, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at McCreedy Home in Washington.

A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Brighton United Church, with the Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton.

Visitation begins at 3 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton with family present 5:30-7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials for Brighton United Church and McCreedy Home may be left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the funeral home at PO Box 149, Brighton 52540.

Mr. DICKINSON was born May 3, 1925, the son of Gail James and Veva Ruth KEEGAN DICKINSON. He married Alice STATLER March 10, 1951, in Brighton.

He grew up in Brighton and graduated from Pleasant Plain High School in 1944.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was active in his community as a long-time member of the Brighton United Church and member of the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department.

He worked for the telephone company for 32 years, retiring in 1987.

He and his wife moved to Washington, Iowa, in April 2010 and to the McCreedy Home in August 2011. He made many friends there and began taking care of the flowerbeds at the home.

Family was very important to him and he enjoyed attending many activities for his children and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Terry DICKINSON and spouse Donna of Plymouth, Minn.; one daughter, Diane SHEETS and spouse Mark of Keota; four grandchildren; one brother Ralph "Dubs" DICKINSON; and one sister Jane WHITAKER both of Brighton.
