Terrance (sic) HELLWEG, 21, was taken by ambulance late this morning to University Hospital in Iowa City for treatment of what county officers described as self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl HELLWEG, who reside about three miles northeast of Fairfield on the Perlee Road.
HELLWEG was found in the haymow of the barn by his father at approximately 10 a.m.
County officers received a call from the HELLWEG farm at 10:05 a.m. The officers summoned the Fairfield Fire Department to help remove the wounded man from the haymow. Long ladders were needed.
County officers were assisted by state troopers and city police in the investigation. HELLWEG was described as being in critical condition at the time he was taken from the farm by ambulance.
Officers said it appeared as if the wound was inflicted between 9 and 10 a.m.
