Eugene L. ZEHR

Eugene L. ZEHR, 78, of Washington, Iowa, died Friday, May 31, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A service is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with Arnold Zehr and Fred Zehr officiating. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will be at Elm Grove Cemetery (note: in Washington, Washington Co., IA).

Visitation begins at noon Friday at the funeral home with family present 6-8 p.m. A Masonic Lodge service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home

Memorials have been established for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Mr. ZEHR was born Feb. 23, 1935, in South English, the son of Abraham K. and Louise M. "Lucy" EASH ZEHR. He married Deidre MILLER June 28, 1959, at United Methodist Church in Washington, Iowa.

He attended school in Keota and graduated from Keota High School in 1953.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving for four years.

Following marriage, he and his wife lived in Keota before moving to Washington, Iowa in 1970.

He owned and operated Washington Electric Service for 43 years.

He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, was a 33rd degree Mason, and a member of the KAABA Shrine.

He was a long time Boy Scout Master and actively supported Boy Scouts.

He was a long time member of the Southeast Iowa Antique Car Club.

He enjoyed traveling, shopping, antiquing and visiting with friends.

He loved being outside and spending time on his farm.

Survivors include his wife, Deidre ZEHR of Washingtin; three sons Christopher ZEHR and wife Audrey, Samuel ZEHR and Michael ZEHR, all of Washington, Iowa; one daughter, Andrea RICH and husband Loren of Wayland; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Kathryn PRATT of Agency.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Austin, Lawrence, Wayne Cecil and Stanley ZEHR (sic).
