L.B. Trusty SHRIVER passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2013, at his home, surrounded by friends and caregivers.
L.B. was born in Fairfield on November 20, 1946, son of the late Eldon Ray and the late Elaine TRUSTY SHRIVER. The family lived in the area for several years before moving to northeast Iowa where L.B. graduated from Tripoli High School in 1964.
He then attended the University of Iowa in the School of Journalism. While a college student in Iowa City, L.B. was the first person to be instructed in the Transcendental Meditation technique in Iowa. He became a teacher of TM shortly thereafter. L.B. was the person that alerted the TM movement about the availability of the Parsons College campus as a new location for the Maharishi International University.
Once MIU relocated to Fairfield, L.B. enrolled as a full-time student and served as student body president. He graduated from MIU with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies in 1983 and then earned a Masters in Professional Writing in 1988.
As a journalist, L.B. was a thoughtful and provocative contributor to the discussion of local issues and the TM movement in particular. A self described 'public intellectual' during the early 1990s he published "Survival in Paradise" as a forum for free speech, exploration about community and spiritual freedom.
L.B. also taught Tai Chi and served as freelance professional writer and editor. For a quiet, private man, L.B. was very well known and recognized for his wit, kindness, love of knowledge, passion for truth and dedication to the quality of life here in the community he loved.
From 2010 to 2012 he lived in China where he taught English and met the love of his life, Xiaoli JI. He was preparing to bring her to America when he became terminally ill with liver cancer.
L.B. navigated his illness with grace and courage with the support of devoted friends. Sacred Journey Palliative Services and HCI Hospice were his hospice care providers. His friends are working to complete some projects that he was unable to finish for himself. In accord with his wishes as a native son, L.B.'s body was buried in a local cemetery.
Survivors include his partner, Ms. Xiaoli JI of China, a brother, T.A. SHRIVER and sister-in-law, Irene, of Austin Texas; a niece, Christina of Waterloo, Iowa; and a nephew, Timothy, of Austin; aunts, uncles and cousins mostly from northern Iowa and a very large 'family of choice' from around the world. L.B. was a cherished member of this community.
In his memory, the L.B. Shriver Memorial Library and Reading Room will be developed from his personal library of more than 700 volumes at the Phoenix Rising Hall.
Memorial contributions in L.B.'s name can be made to the non-profit Sacred Sun Ministries, 2581 Glasgow Rd., Fairfield tht helps cover health care costs and services to people in need.
A Celebration of Life for L.B. will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Phoenix Rising Hall (the former First Christian Church) on the corner of Third and Burlington St., Fairfield. Potluck meal to follow.
