Helen 'Maxine' ROSS

Helen "Maxine" ROSS, age 97 of Batavia, passed away at 5:15 PM, Monday, March 18, 2013 at the home of her daughter Kathy in St. Cloud, MN.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 23 at Calvary Baptist Church in Batavia, with Tom Shipley officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, March 22 at Grace Funeral Care in Batavia.

Helen Maxine ROSS was born on July 26, 1915 in Jefferson County, the daughter of Howard and Hazel HYDE SHAFFER.

She was educated in a country school in Brighton, graduating in 1932. On May 6, 1945 she married Donald Maxwell ROSS in Fairfield. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet MARTIN and husband Walter of Moline, IL, and Kathy TEETER and husband Randy of St. Cloud, MN; three sons, Larry ROSS and wife Margaret of Alamogordo, NM, Michael ROSS and wife Connie of Batavia, and Barry ROSS and Gennie CRAWFORD of Batavia; two step-sons, Robert ROSS and Kathy OTTS of Moline, IL, and William ROSS and wife Margaret of Anacortes, WA; and one step-daughter, Margaret Ann WORK of Harrison, Arkansas. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, thirty four great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Wanda BRINTON of Hills, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter-in-law, one nephew, and one step-grandchild.

Maxine was a devoted mother and grandmother spending most of her years caring for her family and home.

Upon her graduation from high school she taught in a one room country school for 3 years. She also worked in various restaurants as a waitress and at John Morrell for 4 years. She was later a co-owner and operator of the Batavia Drive Inn. She enjoyed visiting with people and feeding them a meal. She liked to collect recipes and newspaper clippings to share with her family and neighbors.

She enjoyed many years of riding three wheelers with her husband and family. In her last years she enjoyed reading her Cappers magazine and keeping up with the news back home through the Courier. She had a love for animals and especially loved to hold and pet the family dog, Chula. She cherished the presence of family, friends, and the volunteers who assisted her.

A memorial fund is being established for the Pregnancy Resource Center, St. Cloud, MN, Great River Faith in Action, Becker, MN, or St. Cloud Hospital Hospice, St. Cloud, MN.
