"Rutherford Bates, 82, former resident, died yesterday at Davenport. Bur. Antioch. Born Aug 17, 1876 in Jefferson County, son of Wm. & Permelia Westenhaver Bates. Lived in Jefferson County until 1922 when he moved to Davenport. His wife died Nov. 8, 1921. Survived by one brother, Fay Bates, Davenport, and a number of nieces and nephews."
