The Reverend Velman L. LUSE, 85, of Decorah, IA, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Vel was born on March 17, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, IA, to Frances and LuLu (FLEISHER) LUSE.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
On August 31, 1947, he married Margaret Lou (COOPER) LUSE.
He graduated from Drake University Divinity School in 1951.
He served congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
The churches served in Illinois were Mt. Sterling, Sullivan, Bloomington, and Rock Island.
He was designated the Illinois Rural Pastor of the year in 1963.
Iowa churches he served included Pleasantville, Diagonal-Tingley, Norwalk, Washington, and Panora, with interim positions in Rantoul, IL and Hedrick, IA, retiring in 1989 from the ministry.
He was active in retirement serving on various organizations' boards in the Keosauqua, IA area.
An extremely creative, imaginative individual that loved life, and a good story, his humor was contagious to everyone he met.
He was an artist in the Studio Art Tour for the last five years and engaged himself in conversation with everyone that visited.
He enjoyed watercolor painting, scroll woodworking, wood carving, jewelry making with beads or stones, flower gardening, and CRIBBAGE.
He taught cribbage to all of his grandchildren, some great grandchildren, and children.
His first words after a hug and a hello were "Do you want to play Cribbage?"
Surviving are his children, Linda (Mike) HOOD of Eureka, IL, Steve (Sarah) LUSE of Decorah, IA, Tom (Sue) LUSE of West Des Moines, IA, Marcia (Doug) NELSON of Rock Island, IL; 10 grandchildren (super cousins) and 9 great-grandchildren (super duper cousins) with another on the way; and Pierre, his lovable dog.
Preceding him in death were his wife Marge in 2004; his parents; brothers, Fran and Jim; and sister Phyllis ANDERSON.
The body has been bequeathed to the betterment of science, and mankind.
A Celebration of Life Service will be on April 6 in Decorah.
