Stella F. Smothers
January 20, 2004Stella F. Smothers, 98, of Batavia, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Jefferson County Hospital.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia, with the Rev. Thomas Raphael-Nakos officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.
Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today and continue until 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the service Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to Batavia United Methodist Church or the Fairfield Public Library.
Mrs. Smothers was born Oct. 27, 1906, in Fremont, the daughter of Bryon and Cora Jones Wilcox. She married Merle Smothers July 21, 1933, in Sigourney. He died May 3, 1970. She married Thomas Lorton June 3, 1993. He died in January of 1997.
Mrs. Smothers was raised and educated in Fremont and Hickley, Minn., living most of her adult life in the Batavia area. She had been employed at Parsons College in Fairfield and later for Gobble Clothing Store in Fairfield for 25 years.
She attended Batavia United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean DeVore of Batavia; one stepdaughter, Tommey Fincher of Cantril; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Wilcox; and one sister in infancy.
