James J. KARAMBELAS, recently of Fairfield, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, in Hollywood, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Building 112, Conference Center on the Maharishi University of Management campus. Contributions in his name may be made to the M.U.M. Scholarship Fund.
Mr. KARAMBELAS was born in 1939 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary and Yale University. He held graduate degrees from both Yale and Middlebury College and completed a post-graduate fellowship at Moscow University in Russia.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant aboard the USS Dixon in the Mediterranean, then taught at Pingry School in Elizabeth, N.J. He worked as a simultaneous interpreter in Russian and French at the United Nations for almost 25 years. He served as president of Community Church of New York City, a member of the President's Council of Wyoming Seminary, a delegate to the Association of Yale Alumni, president of Maharishi Vedic Science Association of Yale Alumni, and president of the SCI Club at the UN.
He learned transcendental meditation in 1971, became a Sidha in 1979, and later, organized a yogic flying demonstration at the United Nations.
Survivors include his wife, Evy; one brother; and one sister.
