Susan G. ROTH

Susan G. ROTH, 78, of 504 S. Main St., died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The body has been cremated. A private family service will be held Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairfield Community Schools for a special book fund in Mrs. ROTH's name to be shared equally by the Lincoln and Washington elementary school libraries. Memorials may be sent to Robert Roth, 504 S. Main St., Fairfield 52556.

Mrs. ROTH was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Samuel and Lillian GUSACK. She married Merall ROTH Dec. 6, 1941, in Washington, D.C.

She graduated from University of Maryland and moved with her husband to Marin County in California in 1953 where he practiced medicine and she volunteered with Marin Heart Association, Marin Headstart, Marin Cancer Society, and local schools for the physically and mentally challenged.

She was honored nationally for her work as a psychiatric technician at Ross Hospital with the Dr. Thomas F. Frist Humanitarian Award in 1982.

She moved to Fairfield in 1982, where she lived for 18 years, working as a volunteer with the Ottumwa and Fairfield Headstart programs and the Lincoln and Washington elementary schools in Fairfield. For her work teaching reading to children, she received the Fairfield Community Schools Friend of Education Award and the International Reading Association Award for Des Moines.

Survivors include one daughter, Ellen SMITH of Fairfield; three sons, Robert ROTH of Boone, N.C., Bill ROTH of Santa Fe, N.M., and Tom ROTH of San Francisco, Calif.; two grandchildren; one brother, Milton GUSACK of Chevy Chase, Md.; and two sisters, Adele LEBOWITZ of McLean, Va., and Vernie OURIEFF of Los Angeles.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one sister, Eleanor DUNN.
