BROOKHART dies suddenly at 53

Gordon S. BROOKHART, Fairfield High School principal, died suddenly Thursday night after suffering a heart attack at his home at 1001 S. Second St. He was 53.

BROOKHART was stricken about 9:30 p.m. He was admitted to the Jefferson County Hospital a short time later, where he died at 11:07 p.m. An emergency helicopter ambulance was summoned from University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, but his death occurred before he could be transferred.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the high school auditorium with the Rev. Charles Kincaid officiating. Burial plans are incomplete. Members of the BROOKHART family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 to 8 o'clock at the Raymond Funeral Home.

BROOKHART had been a member of the Fairfield High School faculty for 21 years. He was born Sept. 1, 1928 in Fort Madison, the son of Alfonso and Lera JACKSON BROOKHART. A graduate of Fort Madison High School, he received his BA degree at Iowa State Teachers College and his MA degree from Iowa State University.

BROOKHART began his career in education at Boone High School, serving as a teacher and coach there for 10 years before coming to Fairfield in 1961 as assistant high school principal. He was named principal in 1966, succeeding Richard Manson.

He was married June 12, 1949 to Marjorie CORNELL. Surviving are his wife; a son, Randy, Council Bluffs; a daughter, Caroline ADAM, Richland; and three grandchildren. Also surviving are his mother, Lera BROOKHART, Fort Madison; and a sister, Janice NEWBY, Moberly, Mo. He was preceded in death by his father.

BROOKHART was a member of the First Christian Church, a director of the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Jefferson County Crime Stoppers Coalition. He recently completed 10 years of service as a director of the Iowa High School Boys Athletic Association. He was an active high school track official, serving as starter for a number of state meets.
