Jacob PFOUTZ.

Jacob PFOUTZ was born in Pennsylvania, March 24, 1833. At the age of five he came with his parents to Iowa and settled with them near Rome. Here he grew to manhood and spent the greater part of his life. At the beginning of the Civil war he enlisted in the 1st Iowa cavalry, Company E. He was in the battle at Prairie Grove and many other hard fought battles. While many of his comrades fell on the field, he passed unurt. He was a true and loyal soldier, ever faithful in the defense of his country's cause. After three years of active service he was compelled to retire and for disability received his honorable discharge.

He was united in marriage to Prudence R. HICKENBOTTOM, January 8, 1867, by the Rev. Jonathan Lee, who conducted the funeral services. To this union were born three daughters. Mary preceded her father to to (sic) that unknown shore at the age of eleven. The other two are Mrs. Kate STEPHENSON of Pocatella, Ida (sic - Idaho), and Mrs. Edna WOELLHAF of Fairfield. The bride of his youth, the two daughters and one sister, Mrs. SCOTT, of Rome, are left to mourn his death.

Eleven years ago he retired from active farm life and moved to this city. Here he resided until his death, January 7, 1907. He was a kind husband, a good father, a loyal, upright and honest citizen. During his last sickness he arranged all his business affairs and made all plans for his funeral and burial which occurred at Lockridge Wednesday morning, January 9. In answer to the question, "Are you prepared? Are you ready to go?" he said "I am ready" and to the very last he expressed his desire to depart.
