Abraham STANFORD, a well known resident of Fairfield, died Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the home of his son J.F. STANFORD near the Washington school house..oldest man in Jefferson County at the time of his death, being 97 years of age. Abraham STANFORD was born in Alleghany County, PA on June 17, 1815.. When two years of age, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Isaac STANFORD, emigrated to Delaware County, OH and within a few days after arriving there both parents and two children died. Four children were left orphans and one of these was Abraham. He was bound out to a farmer for whom he worked until he attained his majority. In 1839 he floated down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers to Peoria, IL and from there made his way through Henry county to Cedar Township, Jefferson county. The land in Cedar Township had just come into the market and on his return trip Mr. STANFORD stopped in Burlington to enter 120 acres of it. The following winter he engaged in splitting rails in Illinois. In February 1840 he returned to Jefferson county and while waiting for his cabin to be erected stayed at the house of Joel Bradshaw and on Feb. 9, 1841 he married Mr. Bradshaw's daughter, Nancy BRADSHAW. To them were born eight children, two of whom, with their mother, preceded Mr. STANFORD in death. The oldest son died while serving his country as a soldier during the Civil War. The surviving children are J.J. Stanford of KS, Mrs. Hayden DOUGHTY and Mrs. David BOLEY of Fairfield, Mrs. George MOORE of NE, A.L. STANFORD of TX and J.F. Stanford of this city. Methodist church.
