Mary Jo NEWLAND BERGLAND

Mary Jo NEWLAND BERGLAND, 72, recently of McHenry, Ill., died of breast cancer Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at the Centegra Hospital in McHenry.

Memorial services are Saturday at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill.

Mrs. BERGLAND was born Sept. 23, 1940, the daughter of Charles E. and Dorothy HULL NEWLAND of Batavia. She married Gary BERGLAND, March 4, 1962.

She attended Des Moines No. 3 school and graduated eighth grade with the highest grades of the country schools in Jefferson County.

She had been a member of the Willing Workers and the Des Moines Ramblers 4-H clubs. She was well known in the area for her purebred Holstein herd.

She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1959 and attended Iowa State University.

She and her husband relocated to Auburn, Ala., and while there she finished her education in home economics.

In 1963 they took job assignments in American Samoa for two years. She put her home economic skills to work, instructing the Samoan people in basic cooking, sanitation and home economic skills. She rode a motorbike to outlying villages.

They returned to the United States, settling in the Chicago area permanently.

She wrote food columns for the Chicago Daily News, the Sun Times and the Chicago Tribune. Her family estimates she developed 2,000 recipes for cookbooks and her columns.

She taught home economics for several years, including at Lake Park High School in Roselle, Ill., what is now Edison Middle School in Wheaton, Ill., and finishing her teaching career at Jack Benny Middle School in Waukegan, Ill., where she taught special education. She retired from teaching in 2002.

She continued to develop recipes and recently had developed a line of food confectionary toppings, the first flavor was S'More Crunch.

Survivors include her husband Gary; her daughter, Malia BEAL and spouse Ben, of Chicago; two grandchildren; and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
