Obituary

Mary Elizabeth RIDINGER was born November 4th, 1834. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Samuel RIDINGER who lived and died many years ago in the southeast part of Penn township. At the age of 13 years and 6 months she was married, May 5, 1848, to Thomas HAWK. 14 children were born to them, only 5 survive her. She was converted and united with church during a series of meetings held at the Lower Richwood, conducted by Rev. Alfred Wilson, in the winter of 1868. Her death occurred at her home in Buchanan township, January 11, 1906, aged 71 years, 2 months and 7 days. A truer wife, a more loyal mother and a better neighbor never lived. As a Christian she put into practice what she professed. It can be said of her a good woman is gone.

The funeral services were held at the Richwood church Sabbath conducted by Rev. J.S. Miller, of Mt. Pleasant, using as a text the 13th verse of the 14th chapter of Revelations. The services were largely attended by neighbors and friends.

(Transcribed as published. Volunteer transcription. I am of no relation.)

Admin. note: She was divorced from Thomas and then married him a second time. She is buried in Upper Richwoods Cemetery, while Thomas is buried in Bonaparte, Van Buren Co., IA. One of her obituaries notes her death on January 11th, but in the rest of them and on her gravestone it's January 12th.
