Robert E. WHITTEN

Robert E. WHITTEN, 88 of Fairfield, died Monday, July 23, 2012, at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Nate Nims and Dave Peterson officiating.

Interment with full military honors will be at Packwood Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield. A Masonic service will be conducted at the visitation by Clinton Lodge No. 15 A.F. & A.M.

A memorial has been established to First United Methodist Church.

Mr. WHITTEN was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Bussey, the son of Marion Albert and Mabel Catherine NORDEEN WHITTEN. He married Cora CAPPS Aug. 28, 1948, at the Methodist church in Ottumwa.

He lived most of his childhood in the Packwood community, graduating from the Packwood High School in 1941.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the China, Burma and India theater of operations.

He attended an air conditioning school in Des Moines in 1949.

He and his wife ran the Packwood grocery store and he was a distributor for Borden's Dairy.

They lived in Hedrick until 1957 when they moved to Townsend, Mont. and operated Bob's Superette grocery store.

They moved to Fairfield in 1964. He was in partnership in the M & W Refrigeration, and after retirement he assisted his daughter at the Dairy Bar.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fairfield, Clinton Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 15 and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Cora; two daughters, Sharon HARBISON and spouse Don of Brighton and Janet WHITTEN of Des Moines; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alberta CONDON of Fairfield and Dorothy HAHN of Townsend, Mont.; and one brother, Jack WHITTEN of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Roberta MOSINSKI; and three brothers, Everett, Charles and Gilbert WHITTEN.
